To understand a country in greater depth, including its history and culture, it’s important to head out of the big cities. We plan some excursions to help you do just that (and you’re welcome, of course, to venture off on your own during your breaks and weekends).
If you’re studying abroad in Aberdeen, you can join in on two day trips.
Excursions planned for each program vary, but past terms have included trips to:
(Day trip)
Whether you call it simply Slains Castle or New Slains Castle (as it’s also referred to), jump at the opportunity to join us on an adventure to this shell of a ruined castle overlooking the North Sea from its cliffside site about half an hour drive north of the city. We’ll also head to the nearby Bullers of Buchan, which refers to a collapsed sea cave as well as the adjacent hamlet of cottages that were historically a fishing village.
(Day trip)
See the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Scotland’s first lighthouse, the Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, an active lighthouse which began its life in 1787 as a giant lamp on the roof of a castle. Eventually, it gained a foundation, walls, and a spiral staircase.
(Day trip)
Head into the Scottish Highlands to Inverness (which comes from Scottish Gaelic meaning, “Mouth of the River Ness.” Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch that extends about 23 miles southwest of Inverness. It is, of course, best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, also affectionately referred to as “Nessie.”
(Day trip)
The stunning Isle of Skye is well worth visiting. We’ll drive over the bridge that connects the island to Scotland’s northwest coast, and spend the day exploring its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages, and medieval castles. The rocky slopes of the magnificent Cuillin mountain range that dominates the island make for some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland!
