Oh, Aix-en-Provence: A city of light, art, sun-drenched streets, elegant fountains, delicious food, and a rich cultural scene. Aix brings together its deep history and a vibrant student scene. When you study abroad here, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to soak up its Provençal beauty, connect with other students from across the globe, wander through its colorful markets, dive into the local artistic heritage, study in one of the many cafes, and relax in the laid-back lifestyle of the South of France.
Here’s a quick guide to some of the city’s most inviting areas so you can find a neighborhood that feels like home.
LE COURS MIRABEAU
The heart of Aix is Le Cours Mirabeau, an iconic boulevard lined with plane trees, cafes, and historic mansions. The life of the city flows through here, making it the perfect place for people-watching with an espresso at Les Deux Garçons (which has seen Hemingway and Picasso walk through its doors), filling your bags with fresh fruits and veggies and all things made from lavender at the local market, or strolling past the famous fountains like Fontaine de la Rotonde.
VIEUX AIX (OLD TOWN)
Aix’s picturesque old town is a maze of narrow, winding streets, as many old towns tend to be. You’ll find yourself walking among colorful facades, artisan shops, and hidden squares. Think tiny bookstores, family-run bakeries, and lively markets. You’ll come across thrift stores which are great for vintage lovers, and one of the best pastry places in town - Pâtisserie Weibel. This is also the spot for the weekly Sunday morning market which fills up with antiques, fresh flowers, and everything in between.
QUARTIER MAZARIN
A quieter place to explore, the refined Quartier Mazarin is known for its sophisticated and peaceful vibes, elegant architecture, and art galleries. You’ll find Musée Grant here, which is one of the city’s most important art museums—home to works by Cézanne, Picasso, and Rembrandt. Place des Quatre-Dauphins, a charming square with a 17th-century fountain, is worth a visit too.
LES ALLEES PROVENÇALES
If you’re looking for something a bit more lively, Les Allies Provençales might be the place for you. It’s more modern, and home to boutiques, bookstores, and cozy cafes. This area is a student favorite for everything from shopping to eating to studying, and it has some welcoming coffee spots like Columbus Café & Co and Maison Nosh (also great for vegan and vegetarian food). If you’re into concerts, dance, or opera, don’t miss Grand Théâtre de Provence, and don’t forget to ask about student discounts.
JAS DE BOUFFAN
It’s a bit further out from the city center, but if you’re an art lover, you’ll want to spend some time in Jas de Bouffan. It was once home to Paul Cézanne and you can see his former family estate as well as explore the surrounding green spaces that inspired some of his greatest works. If you have an interest in Cézane, you can even follow the Cézanne Trail which will lead you to some of the key locations in his life, including his former studio.
SAINT-MITRE
If you’re looking for an escape from the downtown busyness, check out the residential neighborhood of Saint-Mitre for a change. What’s here? Local shops, bakeries, and parks make for some great picnic opportunities. There’s also the Complex Sportif de Saint-Mitre with some useful sports facilities and Parc de la Torse if you want to go for a jog or soak up the sun.
PONT DE L’ARC
Head south of the city center and you’ll find yourself in Port de L’Arc, which is home to quite a big student population since it’s close to Aix-Marseille University. The restaurants here are more affordable to cater to students and there are practical amenities like supermarkets as well as some lovely green spaces.
CELONY
Calling all nature lovers! On the outskirts of Aix is Celony, which is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the great outdoors. Scenic hiking trails and tranquility will be yours. This is also a great place for cycling along the beautiful country roads that lead to the region of Luberon, which is known for its spectacular lavender fields (can you smell them already?) and gorgeous vineyards.
DAY TRIP: SAINT-VICTOIRE
If you’re looking for a quick getaway, try a day trip to Sainte-Victoire where Montagne Sainte-Victoire will sweep you into nature. There’s another connection with Cézanne here as he painted this mountain dozens of times. You’ll easily understand why it inspired him so deeply when you hike its trails. If you’re not a hiker, it’s also worth a visit to Barrage de Bimont which is a beautiful reservoir at the bottom of the mountain and a pretty place for a picnic!
There’s so much to explore and discover in Aix-en-Provence. Each neighborhood has its own character and rhythm. Whether you’re sipping coffee on Cours Mirabeau, wandering through the passages of the Old Town, or taking in the stunning views of Sainte-Victoire, there’s always something new to experience. No doubt that you find the corner of Aix that feels like a second home.
