Oh, All the Places You’ll Go
Words and photos by Maria Eduarda Brizon, who studied abroad with ASA in Seville, Spain, during spring semester 2025.
Over the span of four months, I had the chance and privilege to visit 14 countries and 26 cities. I never thought I’d be able to see so much of the world in such a short amount of time. Traveling definitely takes energy, and planning everything isn’t always easy, but in the end, it’s what you make of the experience that counts.
That said, I also learned how important it is to slow down and enjoy your host country too, because it has just as much to offer as the other places you visit.
Here are my top 5 countries to visit while studying abroad:
1. SPAIN. 🇪🇸
I’m definitely biased since I studied abroad in Sevilla, but Spain truly has my heart. I was lucky to travel all around the country, visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Valencia, Málaga, and Cádiz. Every place had something different to offer.
The food was a huge highlight. You have to try paella, croquetas, and tortilla de patatas, and if you haven’t had Tinto de Verano, you’re missing out; it’s so refreshing.
Spain also has a deep history and beautiful traditions. One of the most important celebrations I witnessed was Semana Santa, where massive floats of Jesus and Mary are carried through the streets in cities like Sevilla, Málaga, and Valencia during Holy Week, leading up to Easter.
Other things you can’t miss:
- The Alhambra in Granada
- Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (it’s stunning inside and out)
- Cádiz for a beach day (only 1.5 hours from Sevilla!)
- Valencia’s aquarium, which even has beluga whales
Spain really felt like home and gave me some of the best memories of my trip.
2. SWITZERLAND.🇨🇭
Switzerland had the most breathtaking views: crystal blue lakes, the Swiss Alps, and cute little towns that look straight out of a postcard.
My top experience was paragliding over Interlaken. I booked it through GetYourGuide, and it was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. I also recommend hiking up Harder Kulm; the views overlooking Interlaken and the mountains were unreal, and we even saw mountain goats along the way. And of course, don’t forget to try the Swiss chocolates.
3. THE NETHERLANDS. 🇳🇱
I went mainly for the tulip festival at Keukenhof Gardens, and it was like stepping into a dream. There were thousands of flowers and so many colors. Definitely visit in mid-April if you want to see them in full bloom.
Another favorite part of my trip was doing a canal boat tour in Amsterdam. It’s such a peaceful way to see the city. If you’re into art but not so much museums, check out an immersive Van Gogh or Rembrandt exhibit—they’re a fun, modern way to learn about the work of these artists.
For food, try:
- Stroopwafels
- Bitterballen
- Poffertjes
One cool experience was going to an ice bar where it was -9.4°C inside and everything, including the glasses, was made of ice.
4. UK 🇬🇧
Visiting London was a bucket list moment for me. Watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace was something I’d always wanted to see (tip: it only happens on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday!).
Other must-dos:
- The London Eye
- Westminster Abbey
- A ferry ride on the Thames
One of my favorite things I did in London was see Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. It’s one of my favorite movies, and seeing it live gave me chills.
For food:
- Go to Borough Market for the best chocolate-covered strawberries and sandwiches from Black Pick.
- Try a loaded jacket potato at Spud Bros Express.
- For an unforgettable meal, check out Swiss Butter.
Also, take the Tube to Notting Hill and explore the pastel houses, vintage shops, and cute local vendors.
5. HUNGARY 🇭🇺
I didn’t expect to fall in love with Budapest, but I did. It’s honestly one of the most underrated places in Europe.
If you visit, you have to do a thermal bath spa day; it’s relaxing and such a unique experience.
Other must-visits:
- The Great Market Hall
- Buda Castle for amazing views of the city
- Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church
- A Prosecco river cruise on the Danube (such a fun way to see the city at night!)
One of the most unique things in Budapest is the Ruin Bars, bars set up in old abandoned buildings, decorated in the quirkiest and coolest ways.
And for food, try:
- Goulash
- Gyros
- Chimney cakes
Overall, I truly believe every place you visit while abroad will teach you something and give you new memories, but these were my top five. I’d go back to any of them in a heartbeat.
Studying abroad was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It opened my eyes to so many different cultures, foods, and ways of life. If you ever get the chance, go for it. Step out of your comfort zone, take the trip, and embrace the adventure. You’ll come back with stories you’ll never stop telling.
