ASA Excursions from Sorrento
To understand a country in greater depth, including its history and its culture, it’s important to head out of the big cities. We plan some excursions to help you do just that (and you’re welcome, of course, to venture off on your own during your breaks and weekends).
If you’re spending a semester abroad in Sorrento, you’ll have two day trips included in your program, and one day trip included if you’re spending the summer abroad:
Excursions planned for each program vary, but past terms have included trips to:
POMPEII
(Day trip)
Take in the marvels of the “doomed city” of Pompeii, which was destroyed by the volcanic ash, gas and burning pumice stone that spewed from Mt Vesuvius in 79 CE, burying the city and killing many of its residents in just 15 minutes. Extensive archaeological works have unearthed much of this ancient Roman city. You can explore the walkways, houses, markets, an ancient fast-food joint, baths, temples, public buildings and necropolis which have since been restored. You can also read political propaganda from the past, learn about historical urban planning, and admire intricate mosaics and frescoes that have been uncovered.
CAPRI
(Day trip)
Think dramatic cliffs, striking clear-blue sea, wisteria-draped villas, and the famous Blue Grotto sea cave. You can slow down and enjoy the Italian food at traditional trattorias, relax at Marina Piccola or Bagni di Tiberio, visit the historic monastery and churches and the Gardens of Augustus, explore the local markets and galleries, hike the Path of the Forts or climb (or take the chair lift) to the top of Monte Solaro for amazing views.
AMALFI COAST
(Day trip)
You’ll find postcard-perfect views along the Amalfi Coast, which has been noted as an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape by UNESCO and listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s made up of 13 towns and villages: Amalfi, Atrani, Cetera, Conca de’ Marini, Furore, Majori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, and Veitri sul Mare. You can walk the famous Path of the Gods, look out over steep cliffs to the Tyrrhenian Sea, stroll through picturesque villages, and take in the ancient architecture. The “Divine Coast” is known for its lemoncello, colorful cliffside homes, and raw and rugged natural beauty.
