How to Make Money While Studying Abroad (Legally!)
Words and photos by ASA Barcelona alum, Aneas Potts.
Studying abroad is an absolute dream come true, but keeping your wallet in check while you’re out exploring the world? That can be a bit of a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make money without getting into legal trouble. Whether you’re into content creation or teaching, here’s how to keep the cash flowing while you enjoy your international adventure.
1. Ambassador Programs
One of the easiest (and most fun) ways to make money is through ambassador programs. Brands love working with people who are out and about, and if you can help promote their products or services, they’ll often reward you with cash or perks. I’ve personally made some great income by teaming up with companies that align with my travel lifestyle.
Pro Tip: Stick with brands you genuinely love. Airtime Rewards offers cashback on shopping, and Duolingo has an affiliate program for language learners. The best part? You’re promoting things you’re already using, so it’s an easy sell!
2. Freelancing & Remote Work
Freelancing is a digital nomad’s best friend. Whether you’re great at writing, graphic design, web development, or even virtual assistance, there’s always someone looking for help online. I’ve worked with small businesses while traveling, creating social media posts and taking photos. If you’ve got a skill, this could be your ticket to extra cash.
Websites like Upwork and Fiverr make finding clients a breeze. And if you need quick, professional-looking designs, tools like Canva or Capcut are your secret weapon for success (these are also my favorites).
3. Sell Your Stuff (Or Make Something to Sell!)
Selling products while abroad can be surprisingly profitable. I’ve sold clothes I no longer needed using apps like Depop and Vinted. These platforms are great for turning old items into cash while lightening your luggage. If you’re more on the crafty side, you could even sell handmade goods or digital art through Etsy.
Selling online is so flexible, and you can do it whenever you’ve got free time. Plus, it’s a perfect way to earn money without feeling tied down.
4. Teaching English or Other Skills
Teaching is another fantastic way to make money, and thanks to the internet, you can do it from anywhere. Whether it’s teaching English through VIPKid or Preply, or even offering lessons in other areas (like photography or music), there’s always someone ready to learn.
Online platforms like Skillshare also let you create courses and teach skills you’re passionate about. This is a great way to not only share your knowledge but earn money along the way.
5. Affiliate Marketing
If you have a blog or a social media presence, affiliate marketing is a great way to earn passive income. By embedding links to products and services within your posts, you earn a commission every time someone makes a purchase using your link. The key here is to recommend products that genuinely fit your niche and audience.
For example, if you’re into travel, partnering with companies like Booking.com, Airbnb, or GetYourGuide can bring in some solid earnings. Every time someone books through your link, you get a cut, making it a simple but effective way to build income.
6. Content Creation
Creating content while traveling is not only fun, but it can also be lucrative. Whether it’s vlogging on YouTube or building your Instagram following, you can turn your travel stories into revenue through ad revenue, sponsorships, and collaborations with brands.
Consistent, high-quality content can attract a loyal audience and open doors for brand partnerships. Tools like Later or Hootsuite can help you schedule posts while you’re busy adventuring.
7. Become an ASA Jetsetter or Content Creator
Ask ASA about becoming a Jetsetter while you’re abroad. This is a program where you complete tasks like short reflections and social media posts to unlock gift cards. ASA also has a grant for bloggers, a grant for Instagram content creators, and opportunities to submit content as and when you like in exchange for gift cards.
These are simple ways to make extra income while abroad since you’re probably already taking plenty of photos and videos.
Conclusion
Making money while living abroad is absolutely possible, and you don’t have to bend any rules to do it. Whether it’s through ambassador programs, freelancing, selling your stuff, content creation, or signing up for one of ASA’s opportunities, there are plenty of ways to support your travels. With the right hustle, you can enjoy your time abroad without stressing over your bank account.
So go ahead, live your dream life, and do it without going broke! The only thing that is holding you back at this point - is yourself.
