The Realities of Studying Abroad

Words and photos by Maria Eduarda Brizon, who is studying abroad with ASA in Sevilla, Spain, during the spring semester of 2025.

THE REALITIES OF STUDYING ABROAD: MORE THAN JUST AN ADVENTURE

Time is flying by, and it’s crazy to think how fast my study abroad experience in Sevilla, Spain, has gone. In just a couple of months, I’ve learned so much, like improving my Spanish, trying new foods, taking a flamenco class, and exploring different parts of Spain. I’ve made amazing new friends along the way too, but I’d be lying if I said it has all been easy.

LANGUAGE BARRIERS & CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

While my Spanish has improved, Spaniards speak fast, and sometimes I struggle to keep up. Balancing Spanish alongside English and Portuguese makes it even trickier. Learning a new language takes time, and I’ve had moments of frustration when I can’t express myself the way I want.

Then there are the cultural differences, things I never really thought about before coming here. Mealtimes are later than I’m used to, social norms are different, and people dress up more than I expected. Adjusting takes time, and at first, it felt overwhelming.

But as I’ve met more people from Spain, France, and Portugal, I’ve realized we’re not so different. No matter where we’re from, we all work, study, spend time with loved ones, and enjoy life in similar ways.

THE STRUGGLES NO ONE TALKS ABOUT

One of the hardest parts of studying abroad is something people don’t talk about enough—homesickness. Being away from my family, especially my 10-year-old sister, has been tough. I helped raise her, so missing out on milestones like her elementary school graduation hurts. It’s not just the big things—it’s the little moments, too, like helping with homework or just hanging out.

Then there’s budgeting, another challenge no one warns you about. Between food, travel, shopping, and daily expenses, it all starts to add up fast. I want to explore and make the most of my time here, but I also must be mindful of my spending. Finding a balance between experiencing new things and staying within a budget is something I’m still figuring out.

EMBRACING THE EXPERIENCE

Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Studying abroad pushes you out of your comfort zone in ways you don’t expect, and I know I’ll come out of this stronger. There will always be struggles like language barriers, culture shocks, and missing home, but that’s part of the journey. And through it all, I’m learning, growing, and making memories that will stay with me forever.

LIVING THE DREAM: MY STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE IN SEVILLA

Studying abroad has always been my dream, and now that I’m here in Sevilla, I never want to leave. Time is flying by, and every day brings something new—whether it’s exploring the city, trying new foods, or just embracing life in Spain.

A SCHEDULE THAT FEELS LIKE A DREAM

One of the biggest perks of studying abroad here is that there are no classes on Fridays! But I got even luckier because I don’t have Monday classes either. That means almost every weekend is a four-day weekend, perfect for traveling. During the week, I try to make the most of my time in Sevilla.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are my busiest days, with classes from 9 am to 4:30 pm. After that, I usually go home, rest, and figure out plans with friends which, most of the time,  means food.

100 Montaditos is a favorite—a tapas bar with over 100 different options. But when I’m looking for something cheap and delicious, La Malinche Taquería is my go-to, where every taco is just one euro! I’ve also discovered kebabs, which are everywhere in Europe and are affordable, filling, and seriously good.

On nights we want to go out, we check out Erasmus Sevilla, a club that offers discounted trips and events. Definitely worth it! We also have a local spot—Juri’s in Alfalfa—where the owners treat us like family.

Wednesdays are more relaxed since I only have one class in the evening. I usually spend the day wandering the city, shopping, eating, and just enjoying Sevilla.

TRAVELING AROUND SPAIN

Since I have long weekends, I’ve taken full advantage of traveling! Some of the places I’ve visited so far are Madrid, Barcelona, Córdoba, Granada, Cádiz, and Mallorca. If you ever get the chance to visit Spain, Mallorca is a must. It was my favorite spot because of the stunning beaches. Visit Sóller while you're there for incredible views of the mountains and coast.

MUST-SEE SPOTS IN SEVILLA

If you ever visit Sevilla, these need to be on your list:

  • Las Setas – Amazing panoramic views of the city
  • Royal Alcázar of Seville – A breathtaking historic palace
  • A walk along the river – Perfect for a sunset stroll
  • A flamenco show - a passionate Spanish performance, a must-watch!
  • Wine tasting – Because Spain’s wine is unmatched
  • Go to a soccer game- a fun activity for any age
  • Traditional Spanish food – Tortilla de patatas, paella, croquetas, flamenquín, and jamón and don’t forget the incredible Spanish olive oil!

A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE

Sevilla has become more than just a place where I’m studying abroad; it feels like home. The people I’ve met, the places I’ve explored, and the experiences I’ve had have shaped me in ways I never expected. Every day here is an adventure, and I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity.

If you ever get the chance to study abroad, do it. It’s challenging, exciting, and completely life-changing. And who knows? You might just find a new place to call home.
