ASA Excursions from Rome

To understand a country in greater depth, including its history and its culture, it’s important to head out of the big cities. We plan some excursions to help you do just that (and you’re welcome, of course, to venture off on your own during your breaks and weekends).

If you’re studying abroad in Rome, you’ll be able to join in on the following program inclusions:

Semesters: 2 overnight excursions

Summer term: 2 day trips

Excursions planned for each program vary, but past terms have included trips to:

FLORENCE

(Overnight)

Aix-en-Provence+(9)

One of the most popular overnight excursions Rome students take is to Florence, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance in beautiful Tuscany, central Italy. As another ASA destination, it’s a city we know extremely well, and can’t wait to show you around.

Florence is a walkable city rich in art, history, and stunning architecture, not to mention unforgettable food and breathtaking views. Here you’ll see Michelangelo’s “David” and the Uffizi Galler, which is home to priceless works by Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Michelangelo. You’ll explore the area around the iconic Duomo and walk over the Ponte Vecchio Bridge to see the artisan vendors and snap photos over the River Arno.

VENICE

(Overnight)

Aix-en-Provence+(10)

We head up to northeastern Italy for a visit to the ancient and historically important city of Venice, part of a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by more than 400 water bridges.

You’ll enjoy a ride in a gondola – the classic Venetian boat, and explore the city’s charming buildings, water views, the famous Bridge of Sighs and St. Mark’s Basilica.

Sometimes, on the same trip, our group also visits the island of Burano, known for its colorful buildings and lace-making, and Murano, another nearby island famous for the art of glassblowing.

NAPLES

(Day trip)

Aix-en-Provence+(11)

Just 120 miles southeast of Rome in the Campania region, Naples makes a great day trip. It’s Italy’s third-largest city. Of course, you’ll know it as the birthplace of pizza (and you’ll be sure to try some on the trip!). Lonely Planet calls it “Italy’s most unlikely masterpiece”, full of raw energy, art, and elegance.

There are many beautiful places to explore here, like Posillipo, Nisida, and the famous Mount Vesuvius.
